Juan Martin del Potro reached the US Open semi-finals for the third time Tuesday, defeating John Isner 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 and ending American hopes of a first men's champion at the event since 2003.

A grinning Anastasija Sevastova said she will "need to find some solutions" to cope with the big serves of Serena Williams or Karolina Pliskova in the last four of the US Open.

"Today I just really couldn't get anything to connect".

"I weigh 238 pounds, so I have always said it's pretty hard to play in hot conditions, for me especially, because I weigh a lot and I sweat a lot".

Encouraged by her home crowd, the world number three threatened a comeback by getting the match back on serve at 4-3 but was then broken again before Sevastova served out.

Sevastova, ranked 18th in the world, said she did not have many goals when she returned to tennis. It makes you try to do too much if you're practicing trick shots.

Rafael Nadal could feel grateful that it is 48 years since the US Open introduced, uniquely among the Grand Slams, a deciding set tiebreak. He's very powerful player, and, yeah, he knows how to play these kind of matches. The 20-year-old became the first Japanese woman in the US Open last-eight since Shinobu Asagoe in 2004.

Sevastova, who retired in 2013 because of injuries and returned almost two years later, advanced to her first grand slam semi-final.

"When you don't play big points well, the match can get away from you".

China supports Africa jointly building Belt and Road
Last year, 628,000 African tourists visited China, 4.4 per cent more than 2016, while over a million Chinese travelled to Africa. Analysts said China's pledges highlighted Africa's growing importance to Beijing as its trade war with Washington escalated.

But Stephens said afterwards that she had been feeling under the weather in the build-up to the match. "It's for semi-finals of US Open".

But Tsurenko said she was sick Wednesday, waking up with a sore throat and not breathing well. Her unpredictability meant that the American was often caught out of position, left to play catch-up to Sevastova's quick hands and whizzing brain.

"The last games, it was good that I played in the shade". With temperatures hovering in the low 90s, Sevastova jumped out to an early lead in her match with the third-seeded Stephens, and never relented.

'And obviously defending a title is very hard, very difficult. She broke Stephens twice in the opening set, including at love in the final game.

"I think we nearly all the time have great matches".

Wimbledon will be the most adamant of the four in resisting moves to extend legal coaching during matches, but there is likely to be more agreement on ditching the idea of reducing the number of seeds from 32 to 16.

"He's maybe playing some of the best tennis ever right now for him", said the 6-foot-10, 238-pound Isner, who suffered even more in the 93-degree heat than his foe.

"I lost my nerves a little bit", Sevastova admitted.
