Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

Swells generated by Florence are affecting Bermuda and are expected to reach portions of the U.S. East Coast.

Florence intensified yesterday evening, but by 11 a.m. today, it was a tropical storm with maximum sustained winds down to 65 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center declared Florence to be the first major hurricane of the 2018 season.

The storm is nearly 1,600 miles from the Outer Banks of North Carolina and is still as much as a week away from a potential US landfall, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center. The swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions, according to the Hurricane Center.

Forecasters in the Baltimore region say any impacts here remain unclear.

Forecasters said it was too early to tell where Florence will go.

Even if Florence stays out to sea, models show numerous other systems developing over the Atlantic, nearly on cue as the hurricane season hits its peak on September 10.

The NHC gave three possible scenarios, that the hurricane hits the Southeast, that the storm comes close to the east coast and is weakened or that the Florence remains out to sea with little impact to the United States.

Donald, another preseason no-show, came to terms on a six-year, $135 million contract with the Rams. The Jets made an offer, but it did not include multiple first-rounders, per SNY's Ralph Vacchiano .

The National Hurricane Center on Friday was showing a projected path for Florence that could take the storm along the North Carolina coast. This is due to some strong southwesterly wind shear aloft.

Florence is still far away, but we're keeping a close eye on this storm.

The waves will make for rough seas along the USA coats, Bermuda, the northern shores if the Caribbean and the Canada Maritimes.

The National Hurricane Center said the storm's maximum sustained winds early Friday were estimated to be 65 miles per hour (104 kph).

The remnants of Tropical Storm Gordon were also dying off Thursday, with the storm downgraded to a depression as it moved inland over Mississippi.

The Emergency Measures Organisation is monitoring the storm's track. As the forecast data becomes more refined, we can hopefully shift our focus to one area.

The new storms formed just as tropical depression Gordon left flooding and rain behind for the Gulf Coast.
