"Now that Kim and Trump have pledged to trust and respect each other, Kim wants to come off as a trustworthy and considerate partner to Trump", said Kim Dong-yup, a professor at Kyungnam University's Far East Institute.

Some foreign affairs experts say North Korea is willing to promote talks with the United States with the backing of the two neighbouring friendly countries.

Some defectors and human rights activists criticize North Korea's group performances, including the Mass Games and military parades, for glossing over the country's human rights record and placing extreme demands on performers, especially children.

The past two big anniversaries of North Korea's founding, in 2008 and 2013, did not feature the Korean People's Army, only the civil defense units, which are officially called "Worker Peasant Red Guards".

Airplanes forming the number 70 fly in formation and fire flares during a parade for the 70th anniversary of North Korea's founding day in Pyongyang, North Korea, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018.

The North Korean leader presided at the parade but did not deliver a speech there and authorities opted not to display any intercontinental or medium-range ballistic missiles among the military hardware in the procession.

Kim Jong Un presided over a tempered military parade Sunday, in the latest sign that he wants to revive stalled nuclear talks with the U.S.as he pushes for North Korea to rejoin the worldwide community.

The show did not specifically mention Kim's summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, but a huge, moveable display formed by thousands of school children spelled out slogans praising "multilateral foreign relations" in English and Chinese. We will both prove everyone wrong!

Japan's Abe is set to meet Putin on Monday evening to discuss "boosting economic cooperation and commercial exchanges" but also to "exchange views on the situation on the Korean peninsula", said Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov.

"(China) hopes North Korea and the United States will implement their common understanding (made) in their bilateral summit and keep to the good trend of peace and dialogue", the Chinese official said, adding that China wants to play a "constructive role" in resolving Korean Peninsula issues politically together with other concerned nations.

Former senator Jon Kyl steps in to fill McCain's Arizona Senate seat
His funeral service Saturday at Washington National Cathedral was in many ways a stern rebuke of Trump, with presidents George W. He said during those trips he realized that McCain had better instincts on when to assert U.S. power than anyone else he knew.

Trump and Kim reached a vague agreement to work towards the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, but there has been little movement since and Trump has accused Beijing - North Korea's sole major ally - of complicating Washington's relationship with Pyongyang. "Much better than before I took office".

But US spy agencies reported evidence in July that North Korea is still developing long-range missiles.

Kim, who was joined by Chinese special envoy Li Zhanshu, smiled and waved to crowds but did not make any public statements.

With tensions once again on the rise, a parade featuring the very missiles that so unnerved Trump previous year, and led to a unsafe volley of insults from both leaders, could be seen as a deliberate provocation.

The displays - overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, the third member of his family to rule the country - are crucial to Korea-watchers, who observe them closely for clues about its latest advances.

This year's parade wasn't televised but the state media apparatus filmed it - even using drones with cameras.

In April, leader Kim declared the North's nuclear programme a success and said the country's new strategic priority would be "socialist economic construction".

This year's celebrations also mark the revival of North Korea's iconic mass games after a five-year hiatus.

Tickets to this year's spectacle started at just over US$100 and went up to more than US$800 per seat.
