Apple Can Avoid Tariffs by Shifting Production to US

The Trump administration is poised to impose 25 percent penalties this week on $200bn worth of Chinese goods

The Trump administration is poised to impose 25 percent penalties this week on $200bn worth of Chinese goods

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Friday to impose higher tariffs on an additional $267 billion of Chinese goods "on short notice".

And then he went further, saying he's also ready to hit another 267 billion worth of imports right after. "To a certain extent it's going to be up to China", Trump said. "That totally changes the equation".

Stocks dipped after Trump's comments became public but recovered most of their losses.

Gao said the two sides were still in contact and communicating on a working level, and "exchanging opinions on issues of mutual concern to work towards resolving the China-US trade problems". President Trump also expects to meet with leaders in Europe next week to discuss cross-Atlantic trade tensions.

The Trump administration began imposing a series of tariffs on goods from China this summer, but up until now, consumer electronics have been left off the list.

That list includes some consumer products, like cameras, luggage and tires and they'd be subject to tariffs of 10-25 percent.

Mobile phones, the biggest U.S. import from China, have so far been spared, but would be engulfed if Trump activates the $US267 billion tariff list.

The public comment period on the new tariffs ended Thursday, the last step before a decision.

But the higher cost of wages in the United States could offset the benefits Apple might gain by avoiding tariffs affecting its products manufactured in China.

The new duties will start to hit consumer products directly, including furniture, lighting products, tires, bicycles, and vehicle seats for babies.

If the president follows through, the threatened tariffs and those already in place would more than cover the value of all goods the USA buys from China, according to U.S. government data from previous year. While every element of the U.S.jobs report remains highly significant, there will be a special focus on wage growth.

In its filing, Apple challenged that approach, writing that "it is hard to see how tariffs that hurt US companies and USA consumers will advance the Government's objectives with respect to China's technology policies".

While the President often brags about his accomplishments via Twitter, official data shows that China's trade surplus with the United States is greater than ever.

In addition, the chip industry is a source of trade surplus for the United States, including with China, Intel argued. "It's just another indication we're not out of the woods yet", she said.

China will be forced to retaliate if the USA ignores resistance in public hearings and imposes additional tariffs, said Gao Feng, a Ministry of Commerce spokesman, at a regular briefing on Thursday in Beijing. "However, hope springs eternal".
