Far right expects gains as Swedes vote in uncertain election

The potentially promising prospects of the far-right Sweden Democrats had many other Swedes anxious about an erosion of the humanitarian values that have always been a foundation of the Scandinavian country's identity. The number was far lower than the asylum-seekers Germany accepted that year, but the highest per capita of any European nation.

Currently, Social Democrats leader and Prime Minister Stefan Lofven have a minuscule two-mandate lead over the centre-right opposition, with 144 seats against 142.

In Sweden, to enter Parliament, a party has to pass the 4-percent threshold.

It was unlikely any single party would secure a majority of the 175 seats in the Riksdagen, Sweden's parliament.

Sweden held a general election on 9 September, alongside regional and municipal elections. The party has dominated Swedish politics in the post-World War II era.

"We have increased our mandate in parliament and we see that we will have an vast influence on what is happening in Sweden in the next week, the next few months and the next few years", he told supporters.

The anti-immigration Sweden Democrats that wants the country to leave the European Union and impose a freeze on immigration, appears poised to become the third largest party in parliament.

The potential of a surge by the party had many Swedes anxious about an erosion of the humanitarian values that have always been a foundation of their country's identity.

However, both the parties rejected the invitation from the former neo-Nazi party.

The preliminary results suggest the Sweden Democrats have fallen short of expectation and that voters have not been as receptive to their anti-immigration rhetoric as it may have seemed.

Akesson responded that state television shouldn't take sides, and later announced that he wouldn't take part in any of SVT's election programs Sunday.

Party leader Akesson told Swedish public radio on Monday he expected to wield major influence.

Three People Missing After Colorado River Boat Collision
Facebook Christine Lewis was identified as one of four people missing after two boats collided on Saturday on the Colorado River . The Mohave County Sheriff's Office said the body of 50-year-old Brian Grabowski of Tulare, California , was found around 9 a.m.

"We are the guarantee to oust the current government from power", he said.

Supporters of the Sweden Democrats react in jubilation during an election night event in Stockholm on Sunday, after an exit poll showed the anti-immigrant party making gains.

"Sweden needs breathing space, we need tight responsible immigration policies".

He sparked an outcry during a televised debate on Friday when he said foreigners had more difficulty finding jobs "because they're not Swedes".

When the Social Democrats finally did address public concerns over immigration and crime during the campaign earlier this year, the party mimicked numerous talking points and policies of the far-right.

"They say very bad things".

"We need to be sincerely grateful for that". The center-right Moderates also lost support, but they stayed in second place overall. "We can't just throw them out".

And while the exact outcome remains uncertain, he said the one certainty was Sweden's migration policies will now be reassessed.

Tuva Sundh, who also cast her vote Sunday, said she was concerned about integration. "It's not just about what happened two years ago when we had a lot of refugees". Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall. But thanks to the Sweden Democrats, it became a question that couldn't go unanswered, Johan Hassel, the Social Democrats' worldwide secretary, said after the vote.

"I know who won this election", said party leader Jimmie Akesson to a great jubilation from supporters. "Before, it was not OK to say to someone, "You should go back home where you come from.' It was not OK", Sundstrom of the Olof Palme International Center said". As for Sweden Democrats' warning of the "Islamization" of Sweden, the average Swede vastly overestimates the percentage of the population that is Muslim. "Actually, it's the immigrants who built up this country".

Mattias, a Stockholm resident at an election night party in the city, said he was "extremely concerned" about the far right's steady climb.

- Jari Tanner reported from Helsinki. "And today I feel a bit insecure about the future, especially for my children".
