North Carolina officials on Monday ordered residents to evacuate the state's Outer Banks barrier islands beginning on Monday ahead of Hurricane Florence, the first major hurricane to threaten the eastern United States this year.

Based off the latest forecast track from the NHC, Florence will approach the southeast US coast by Thursday.

By noon EDT (1600 GMT) on Monday, Florence was about 1,170 miles (1,880 km) east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and was a Category 4, the second-strongest on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the NHC said.

At a hardware store in downtown Charleston, South Carolina, store manager John Johnson said the rush on batteries, flashlights, plastic tarps and sandbags began Friday. Georgia, West Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey, southern Pennsylvania, and eastern Tennessee, Kentucky, and OH could also see strong winds.

"We are in the bull's-eye", North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference.

The current track has the storm making landfall along the Carolinas sometime Thursday night as a major hurricane.

As of Monday evening, Florence is moving west northwest at 13 miles per hour and heading over warmer waters and less wind shear, which is conducive for maintaining or gaining intensity.

PETERSBURG — Two hurricanes are active in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center. Drawing energy from the warm water, it could have top sustained winds of 130 miles per hour (209 kph) or more by Tuesday, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said.

It's too early to know the exact path of Florence, but forecasters said it could blow ashore by Thursday in the Carolinas and southern Virginia, a stretch of the U.S. East Coast that experts have identified as the most vulnerable to rising sea levels due to climate change.

Immediately to the north of Virginia, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said his state was also was "preparing for the potential of historic, catastrophic and life-threatening flooding".

Florence's track continues to show it will impact the southeastern USA coast, impacting the Carolinas and Virginia.

A mandatory evacuation order has been issued for residents living along the entire SC coast.

Over the weekend, Governor McMaster has declared a state of emergency for SC and petitioned President Donald Trump for disaster relief aid.

As of Monday evening, Hurricane Florence was moving west-northwest at 13 miles per hour.

"This is a serious storm, and it's going to affect the entire state of Virginia", he said. That would cause more flooding rains across a large swath of the South, after Tropical Storm Gordon inundated the area earlier this month.

In the Pacific, Tropical Storm Olivia is set to sweep through the Hawaiian islands Tuesday, where tropical storm watches have been posted.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Isaac is expected to weaken as it approaches the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean, and then possibly fall apart.
