Former Trump Aide George Papadopoulos Has been Sentenced For Lying to the FBI and he Throws Trump Under the Bus

Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos was sentenced to 14 days in prison on Friday.

As part of his sentence, Papadopoulos also will have one year of court supervision, 200 hours of community service and was fined $9,500.

Before he must surrender to prison, Papadopoulos may be able to travel to NY and to California, where he plans to relocate.

The 31-year-old energy scholar, who in 2016 attempted his maiden venture into electoral politics, eventually became the first former Trump adviser to agree to cooperate with the special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 elections.

Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos was sentenced Friday to 14 days in prison for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation during Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. In fact, the special counsel's office has secured five other guilty pleas or convictions. Papadopoulos admitted that he lied to FBI investigators when they interviewed him. Jeff Sessions taking an interest in a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to a sweeping indictment handed up this summer, Russian intelligence had stolen emails from Hillary Clinton's campaign and other Democratic groups by April 2016, the same month Papadopoulos was told by a professor that Russian officials had told him they had "dirt" on Clinton in the form of "thousands of emails".

Before he was sentenced, Papadopoulos spoke to Judge Randy Moss for about three minutes, reading a speech in which he admitted he was wrong, ashamed and regretful. "I can't guarantee. All I can say is, my memory is telling me that I never shared it with anyone on the campaign".

"In some ways it constitutes a calculated exercise of self interest over the national interest", the judge said.

Moss said he had been considering a 30-day prison sentence but said at Friday's hearing that Papadopoulos had shown "genuine remorse". Papadopoulos was the second person ordered to prison in the sprawling, 16-month Russian Federation collusion investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Moss said he suspects that "just the process of having to go to prison will leave a strong impression on him for the remainder of his life".

U.S. Open: Novak Djokovic beats Kei Nishikori, advances to championship
But signs were not good as Nadal looked in distress about the knee. "Everything", he added with a smile, "is nearly flawless ". The third seed will now await the victor of the second semi-final between Japan's Kei Nishikori and Serbia's Novak Djokovic .

For a time, Papadopoulos also looked to be a key informant.

Beyond his conversation with Mifsud about emails, Papadopoulos said he hoped the professor could use his Kremlin ties to broker "some sort of summit or meeting, mostly for a photo-op" between Trump and Putin.

"14 days for $28 MILLION - $2 MILLION a day, No Collusion". Papadopoulos' defense lawyer, Thomas Breen, tried to shift some of the blame for his client's lies to Trump.

Trump "hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever did", Breen said. "The message is for all of us to check our own loyalty, to tell the truth, to help the good guys". His attorneys, Breen and Robert Stanley, said their client lied to save his career and to "preserve a perhaps misguided loyalty to his master", a reference that is not fully explained in court papers.

"We were going in there to cooperate potentially against those two individuals", he said.

Foreign policy advisor to President Donald Trump's election campaign, George Papadopoulos and his wife Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos leave federal court after his sentencing.

Papadopoulos has asked the judge for extreme leniency.

In comments to reporters aboard Air Force One on his way to Fargo, North Dakota, Trump sought to distance himself from the sentencing. But he acknowledged that Papadopoulos was unsophisticated, naive and even a "fool" for having made contacts with Russian Federation intermediaries during the campaign. And, the prosecutors add, Papadopoulos has been hard for them to handle since he was arrested in July 2017.

Even after his arrest and plea agreement previous year, prosecutors say Papadopoulos continued to be hard with investigators, only providing information after being confronted with documents such as emails and text messages. He publicly contradicted, in his court filing, congressional testimony from Sessions about Sessions' response to the Putin-Trump meeting proposal.
