Australian newspaper insists controversial Serena Williams cartoon is not racist

Herald Sun editor Damon Johnston extended the defence on Twitter as he denied any racism or sexism.

The newspaper defended the cartoonist, Mark Knight, on Tuesday.

In Mark Knight's cartoon, the umpire is shown telling a blonde, slender woman - meant to be Osaka, who is actually Japanese and Haitian - "Can you just let her win?"

Williams was accused of getting "coaching" while playing against Naomi Osaka in the U.S. Open final on Saturday, which made her say to the umpire, "I have never cheated in my life".

Many, including Ms Okafor, have compared it to imagery from the era of Jim Crow, which refers to laws and propaganda that enforced racial segregation in the USA during the 19th and 20th centuries. He portrayed Williams with exaggerated features like oversized lips, a big nose, and wiry hair.

Paul Manafort pleads guilty, avoid new trial
A plea deal puts us just this much closer to what I believe will inevitably result in a resignation. In return, Manafort will not face a second trial in which he could receive more severe punishment.

With the new deal, reports suggest Osaka could climb the Forbes ladder to become the second-highest paid player of 2018, ahead of Caroline Wozniacki but just behind Williams, but she will have to go some way to matching the all-time tennis great.

Others critics have said his cartoon plays into tropes surrounding black people and their historical oppression. "This classic Jim Crow era sexist/racist image does nothing but display the complete disrespect of the superstar and perpetuate the stereotype of an "angry black woman" I am appalled", wrote Jevin Hodge, the vice-chair of the Arizona Democratic Party.

The Executive Chairman of News Corp Australasia, Michael Miller, also threw his support behind Knight and the cartoon. "Mr. Ramos' decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules and were re-affirmed by the U.S. Open's decision to fine Serena Williams for the three offenses".

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on September 9 that Williams must pay a fine of $17,000: $10,000 for verbally abusing the umpire, $4,000 for receiving a warning about coaching; and $3,000 for smashing her racket on the court. According to former umpire Richard Ings, many of them believe that the umpire that Ramos didn't receive proper support from the USTA. The tennis player called the umpire a "thief" and claimed she was being treated differently to how men would be in the same context. "The cartoon is about Serena, it was about her poor behaviour".

There has been dismay over Knight's defence.

Many labelled the cartoon "racist" and "sexist." accusing Knight of using derogatory imagery of African American people.
