Storm chaser records Florence battering Carolina coast

Hurricane Florence trudging across the Carolinas submerging homes with days more rain in store

Hurricane Florence is thrashing the Carolina coast with devastating flooding and hurricane-force winds. "A mother and infant were killed when a tree fell on their house", police tweeted Friday afternoon. A father in the same home was transported to the hospital. Florence should weaken to a tropical storm after 24 hours, and then to below tropical storm strength after 48 hours.

A third person, a woman, died in Hampstead, NC, in Pender County.

"The first bands of the storm are upon us but we have days more to go", Roy Cooper said.

Not everyone was taking Florence too seriously: About two dozen locals gathered Thursday night behind the boarded-up windows of The Barbary Coast bar as Florence blew into Wilmington.

Cooper said Florence was set to cover nearly all of North Carolina in several feet of water.

Here is a look at the storm's latest forecast bubble ... That number was down to 40 later in the day. It's moving north-northeast at 18 miles per hour. "A USGS gauge in Emerald Isle, North Carolina, recently recorded 6.3 feet of inundation". The slow-moving storm is still dumping colossal amounts of rain on North Carolina and parts of northern SC. Hurricane-force winds and inland flooding also is a concern. Some areas of SC could see rainfall totals of up to 15 inches, forecasters said.

A wind gust at the Wilmington airport was clocked at 105 miles per hour (nearly 170 kph), the highest since Hurricane Helene in 1958. A nuclear power plant in Brunswick, NC, has shut operations.

The storm has claimed at least five lives, two of them in Wilmington, NC. Expert scientists, however, had said they were anxious about Brunswick because of scant public information about its readiness.

The Navy says the aircraft will make their way back beginning Saturday, and the ships will start to return Sunday. With Florence, "we're looking at the same amount of rainfall in three days". More than 20,000 people in North Carolina spent the night in emergency shelters Friday night. "We got thrown into mailboxes, houses, trees", said Holt, who had stayed at home because of a doctor's appointment that was later cancelled.

"It was pretty bad".

Gibson said she thinks some people couldn't afford to evacuate New Bern and others didn't heed evacuation warnings after Florence dropped from a Category 4 to a Category 1.

"Just dozens of calls just saying, 'the water is coming in the house, the water is now over the hood of my vehicle".

"The water kept rising and kept rising", he said.

But I think, you know, it's going to be a handsome day Sunday, great weather ... natural grass, a great environment". Carlson said he thought it might have been the first time he had missed three field goals in a game.

The water was seen rising as high as 9 feet, lifting a vehicle on the simulated street beside her and floating it above her head as a street sign was submerged.

"It looks heavy outside", she said.

"We have completed all of our water rescues & want to sincerely thank all of the volunteers who helped us save lives".

Gibson said Friday that while she and her family were safe, she and her husband had gotten around 75 calls and texts from others asking for help.

Florence's slow roll and her massive size make her every bit as potentially lethal as a "stronger" storm.

"I honestly cried", Kittrell said. Hundreds of thousands of people have evacuated the coast, more than 1,500 USA flights have been canceled, factories were shut and farmers rushed to save crops, poultry and pigs in anticipation of the storm.

By Friday morning, the shore was flooded, and buildings were damaged, in video she put up on Facebook.

The New Bern Police Department tweeted early Thursday evening "City of New Bern officials are encouraging all residents to shelter in place due to Hurricane Florence".

Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser and the governors of North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia and Maryland declared states of emergency.

Florence is one of four named storms in the Atlantic.

By 1:50 p.m. the winds had dropped to 75 miles per hour and the center was moving west at a 6 miles per hour, the NHC said, and parts of North and SC would get as much as 40 inches of rain.

As it moves near OH and West Virginia, it will become a remnant low.
