North Korea Pledges to Scrap Missile Launch Site

Residents of Pyongyang, North Korea gather in a plaza outside the city's main train station to watch the news of South Korean President Moon Jae-in's visit on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2018.

The official North Korean narrative is all about ethnic pride, unity and how Kim is paving the way for a Korean-led solution to the decades-old problem of how to bring peace to the peninsula.

But discussions over how to implement the vague commitments have since faltered.

The Tonchang-ri missile pad is now expected to be closed permanently, but the dismantlement of the Yongbyon nuclear facility will be dependent on U.S. actions.

Moon and Kim pledged to jointly bid for the Games at the meeting in the North Korean capital, the third between the two leaders this year.

On Wednesday, Moon was scheduled to visit Mansudae Art Studio - an entity that was blacklisted by the Security Council previous year for earning cash to fund its arms program by erecting monuments and military facilities in African countries.

President Trump took time to celebrate last night in light of the latest news coming out of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korea is seeking relief from crippling worldwide sanctions.

Kim promised to accept worldwide inspectors to monitor the closing of a key missile test site and launch pad and to visit Seoul soon, and both leaders vowed to work together to try to host the Summer Olympics in 2032. The facilities were a key test center for its intercontinental ballistic missiles created to reach the United States.

North Korea has agreed to permanently shut down its nuclear research facilities at Yongbyon and the Dongchang-ri missile test site, and allow "relevant country experts" to visit these sites.

The announcement after the meeting - where the South and North Korean heads also signed a broad peace agreement aimed at continuing denuclearisation efforts in the region - sees the two countries become the latest to express an interest in hosting the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics.

Some South Korean firms had been accused of importing coal from the North disguised as Russian shipments in violation of United Nations sanctions, which critics say raises questions about Seoul's will to vigorously enforce worldwide sanctions.

The visit would mark the first time a North Korean leader visited Seoul since the two countries were split in 1945.

CNN reported that South and North Korea have commited to an "era of no war", taking a step closer to peace by signing a joint military agreement that removes the threat of conflict on the Peninsula.

The United States has so far failed to convince Pyongyang to declare an inventory of nuclear weapons, facilities and materials, or commit it to a specific timeline for denuclearization. U.S. officials want to see concrete steps from the North, including submitting a full list of its nuclear weapons and facilities and fissile materials, and freezing of its nuclear activities.

"We don't have a timeline, and we also don't have any guarantees about the larger nuclear and missile programs".

North Korea had put the iconic games, which feature tens of thousands of performers dancing and flipping placards in unison to create giant mosaics and slogans, on a back burner for the past several years, but revived them for this month's celebrations of its 70th founding anniversary.

Moon landed in North Korea Tuesday morning.

"The two Koreas agreed to jointly take part in global competitions, including the 2020 Summer Olympics, and to seek to jointly host the 2032 Summer Olympics", said the joint declaration signed by the two leaders on the second day of the three-day summit.

The so-called "Agreement on the Implementation of the Historic Panmunjom Declaration in the Military Domain" was signed by Minister of National Defense Song Young-moo and North Korean Minister of the People's Armed Forces No Kwang Chol in Pyongyang.

The neighbours have already agreed to withdraw some guard posts and equipment, in a bid to transform the world's most heavily fortified border into a no-weapons area.

Idlib is home to around 3 million people, around half refugees who fled other parts of Syria following previous regime assaults. Let us make no mistake: "such an operation would not achieve the stated goal", he told the Security Council.
