Mikel Arteta won’t blame Guardiola’s ban for Manchester City defeat

Manchester City’s players were humbled 2-1 by Lyon in a sloppy and apathetic display at the start of their European campaign

Manchester City’s players were humbled 2-1 by Lyon in a sloppy and apathetic display at the start of their European campaign

A move from the back nearly led to Sterling giving City the lead but a minute later, Lyon went ahead when a cross from the left was not dealt with by Fabian Delph and Cornet sent a half-volley into the bottom corner from a tight angle.

"We felt under threat every time we lost the ball and sometimes that brings the confidence a little bit lower", said City assistant manager Mikel Arteta, who was in charge on the bench in Guardiola's absence.

City's troubles deepened when Fernandinho was caught in possession again. On another day we could have come back.

"If Pep had been on the touchline I couldn't tell you whether we would have won 5-0 or lost 3-0".

Perhaps the only reason for City to feel aggrieved in the first half was Gabriel Jesus being denied a penalty when he was tripped by former Manchester United defender Rafael da Silva just before Depay scored. In the second half we dominated and played in the opponents half and created many chances.

"We have a very young squad".

"Hazard" warning for Chelsea's rivals
Hazard praised Giroud's ability to hold the ball and link play, saying: "He is a target man and maybe the best in the world". And the 27-year-old paid tribute to the Frenchman for creating his first two goals at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

But the improvement wasn't sufficient.

Bernardo Silva pulled a goal back midway though the second half after Leroy Sane's introduction breathed fresh life into City but Pep Guardiola's men went down to their fourth consecutive Champions League defeat - making them the first English side to endure such a run.

The Spaniard - who conducted Tuesday's pre-match press conference ahead of facing Lyon in the Champions League due to Guardiola's touchline ban - was one of the favourites to succeed Arsene Wenger at the Emirates.

Although Guardiola's role will be heavily restricted on Wednesday, Arteta confirmed that City's build-up to their Group F opener had been no different than usual.

Last season, City averaged 48,050 at the Etihad in the Champions League as they reached the quarter-finals.

"I don't think it was anything to do with complacency, though, and nor would I try to use the lack of atmosphere in the stadium as an excuse". We knew each other from before but we clicked really quickly and understand each other really well and we think in the same direction.
