"The border with the Sahara can not be bigger than our border with Mexico", Borrell said Trump told him this summer, according to the ministry official.

The US-Mexico border is 3,145km wide, while the Sahara desert stretches for 5,000km.

An audio file obtained by CNN noted that the minister impersonated Trump's voice as he said: "You need to build a wall around the Sahara", referring to Trump's statement.

Spain's politicians have agreed a solution needs to be found to deal with the migration crisis, with Africa's population set to double in the next 20 years.

Spain's Foreign Minister revealed the story at a lunch in Madrid, and even impersonated Donald Trump.

Chants of "build the wall" still break out at Trump's Make America Great Again rallies. Diplomatic sources say that it was probably in late June, when the minister visited the USA in a trip coinciding with that of the Spanish King and Queen.

Spain has now overtaken Italy and Greece as the most popular destination for migrants.

Central American migrants sit on the US-Mexico border wall at its westernmost point, Tijuana, Mexico.

When asked for more details on Borrell's comments, a spokesperson for the foreign ministry told The Guardian, "We can confirm that's what the minister said, but we won't be making any further comment on the minister's remarks".

Spain has two small enclaves on the north African coast, Ceuta and Melilla.

Trump was elected in 2016 having campaigned on a promise to build a wall along the United States' southern border, which he said Mexico would pay for. They have become magnets for African migrants seeking a better life in Europe and refugees fleeing persecution and conflict.
