Cruz, O'Rourke's First Debate In Dallas

However, a poll released 24 hours later by Reuters showed O'Rourke up two points over Cruz. Ted Cruz and Rep. Beto O'Rourke in Dallas as they tackled numerous topics that included immigration, guns and President Donald Trump. Bernie Sanders, someone "out of step with the people of Texas" who wants to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement, take away Texans' guns, and impeach President Trump.

"That system of suspecting somebody, solely based on the color of their skin; searching that person solely based on the color of their skin; stopping that person solely based on the color of their skin; shooting that person solely based on the color of their skin; throwing the book at that person and letting them rot behind bars solely based on the color of their skin, it is why some have called this, I think it is an apt description, the new Jim Crow", O'Rourke said.

Signs of a victory by O'Rourke, a USA congressman from El Paso, in deep-red Texas would likely herald a nationwide Democratic voter wave that could be catastrophic for Republicans. "That's not true", O'Rourke said. His own political career as a councilman in El Paso and in Congress shows he would be able to "stand up to the president when it counts and work with him when I have to". "That's not what Texans want".

Most recent polls show the two in a statistical dead heat.

The Cook Political Report also changed the rating of the race from Lean Republican to Toss up. And that's a big deal in a state where a Democrat has not won a statewide election since 1988.

The vast differences between the two candidates on nearly every hot topic were on display, particularly immigration and border security. That means boots on the ground.

"I think what he's fighting for doesn't work", Cruz said.

Congressman O'Rourke is trying to get people to see beyond red and blue. O'Rourke pushed back.

"To rewrite our immigration laws in our own image and to ensure that we begin by freeing Dreamers from the fear of deportation by making them USA citizens, they can contribute to their full potential", O'Rourke said. "Imagine the cost, imagine the stain on this country for generations moving forward".

Friday's debate at Southern Methodist University focused on domestic policy. Cruz responded by saying he believes legal immigration is good for America while illegal immigration is bad. He raised the specter of the 2016 ambush killing of five Dallas officers by a troubled Army veteran, reportedly upset by stories of police brutaily. Ted Cruz traded blows in an atmosphere that somehow managed to convey the tight race pollsters say is unfolding and yet steer clear of any mudslinging.

But even if she gets an accord in the coming weeks, it must be signed off on in parliament, where she can only muster a slender majority.

"This is why people don't like Washington D.C.", O'Rourke said.

During the debate, O'Rourke said he did not flee the scene. That's exactly what it was created to do.

Cruz recalled meeting with students and teachers from the school.

"I know the sacrifice you are putting in every day", Cruz told O'Rourke. "We can make our schools safer by having officers protect them".

A Dallas Morning News analysis of Cruz's votes found that Cruz had the third-most absences of any senator in 2015, and had the most absences in the Senate in 2016. "The children of Texas deserve action", O'Rourke said. "You just said something that I did not say and attributed it to me". "I will pray for anyone in harm's way, but I will also do something about it".

It was a heated first Texas Senate debate Friday between between Sen.

Asked what he admired about O'Rourke, Cruz managed to compare him to Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

KERA's Bill Zeeble, Christopher Connelly, Anthony Cave and Molly Evans contributed to this report.

The candidates will also debate on September 30 at the University of Houston and on October 16 in San Antonio.

The Nov. 6 elections will determine whether Republicans will retain control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The deadline to register to vote is October 9.
