Day three saw traces of vintage Woods.

Going into Sunday (NZ time) at East Lake, Woods was at seven-under, tied with Englishman Justin Rose.

Woods carded a 5-under par 65 in the third round Saturday after making birdies on six of the first seven holes. Woods's 80th PGA Tour success, if it comes, will unquestionably be his most significant. "And because of that, I felt comfortable when I got to Bay Hill, when I grabbed the lead at The Open Championship. I've got a bunch of guys behind me that have been playing well and are playing well".

There were days during Woods's prime when we could all have gone home at this point, knowing exactly what would happen in the final round. Rose showed his resolve after opening with consecutive bogeys, then rallying to shoot 68 to stay in touch with Woods.

Barring a Sunday bottoming-out that other guy will nearly surely claim this year's FedEx Cup, as even a Woods victory will not be enough to close the gap that now has him 20th in the standings.

He started the week second in the standings behind Bryson DeChambeau, who appears to be out of contention after a 75 that left him equal second-last.

Also vintage was Woods's reception, an outpouring chorus of support that greeted and trailed him on either end of every shot.

The red card was controversial, with Juve chief Massimo Allegri claiming VAR would have seen the decision overturned. Everyone who knows me knows about my respect for women, equality and respect.

McIlroy, 29, won the Arnold Palmer Invitational earlier this year - Woods tied for fifth - but has been mostly frustrated of late, unable to get the most out of his game. It was a slow bleed for Fowler, who went birdie-free over his last 12 holes and shot 39 on the back nine for a 72.

"I'm sure it will be hard for him tomorrow, " Rose said.

"It's obviously exciting for the tournament, it's exciting for golf in general that he's up there but for me, all I can do is concentrate on myself. Go out there, take care of my business, and hopefully that's good enough". He has given himself the cushion he has craved, the advantage from which he was seemingly so unbeatable during his prime. He's 42-for-44 when going into the final round with the outright lead and the last time he blew a 54-hole lead was at the 2009 PGA Championship.

Ever since he first won his card in 2007, the four-time Major victor has kick-started his year in the Middle East on the Tour's so-called "Desert Swing", apart from last year when he was injured.

Woods was tied with Rose at the start of the third round of the Tour Championship but is now three shots clear of the Euro pair following a sublime 65. He led by as many five shots on Saturday.

"I was able to do that in Europe in '07 and it gave me a tremendous amount of pride but to do it against the best players in the world on this tour would be incredible".
