I'd Prefer To Keep Rosenstein, May Delay Planned Meeting On His Fate

Rod Rosenstein Has Verbally Resigned To John Kelly

Rod Rosenstein Has Verbally Resigned To John Kelly

I would certainly prefer [not firing him].

In suggesting that he might postpone Thursday's meeting, Trump said he was focused on the extraordinary Senate Judiciary Committee hearing set for the same day with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and a woman who has accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault when they were teenagers. Rosenstein denied the story.

Rosenstein will be meeting with President Trump directly on Thursday, after which, well, anything can happen.

"I like them a lot", Trump said. A person present at that meeting said he was joking, but the New York Times, which first reported the incident on Friday, cited secondhand accounts indicating Rosenstein was serious.

However, Barber believes that Trump holds all the aces going into that meeting.

"You're doing very well", Trump said, urging the reporter to say "Thank you, Mr. Trump" for the newspaper's increased business. "I may call Rod tonight or tomorrow and ask for a little bit of delay to the meeting because I don't want to do anything that gets in the way, that gets in the way of this very important Supreme Court pick".

Appearing to offer support for the deputy attorney general, Trump said Rosenstein told him that he did not discuss invoking the 25th Amendment previous year while offering to wear a wire to gather evidence of the president's erratic behavior following the abrupt dismissal of FBI Director James Comey.

In April, Cosby was found guilty on three felony counts of sexually assaulting and drugging Andrea Constand in his home in 2004. He has watched the Cosby team's attacks on the court system intensify, and grow more personal, as the stakes grew.

Trump and his allies have criticized Rosenstein's performance in office, though some supporters have also warned the president not to fire the Justice Department official now because of the potential political fallout.

Rosenstein appointed Mueller in May 2017, oversees his work and has repeatedly defended the breadth and scope of the probe.

They have scourged Rosenstein over his role supervising the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, which Trump also broached in his press conference on Wednesday.

Rosenstein's departure, though, could throw a cloud of confusion over the election investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, which Trump has called a "witch hunt", and put its future in doubt.

Over the weekend, Rosenstein offered to resign, and said in particular he was willing to step aside if Trump would not disparage him.

Even if Rosenstein survives the week, it's not clear how much longer he'll be around.
