‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ Trailer

X-Men Dark Phoenix

X-Men Dark Phoenix

Ahead of the trailer premiere for Dark Phoenix later tonight, 2oth Century Fox has officially released the first poster and synopsis for the latest installment of the X-Men franchise.

Starring Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, Dark Phoenix was in production for a very long time, the significance of which changed after the bad reception of X-Men: Apocalypse.

The plot of the film centres on Jean as she struggles to control her powers following a space mission gone wrong. The incident leaves her infinitely more powerful, but also dangerously unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain.

We see Grey's path to the dark side starting in childhood, and the trailer shows us plenty of the character's emotional backstory along with her slow slide into madness.

In a parallel track, we see Michael Fassbender's Magneto and Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique react differently to the introduction of Jean, who could potentially become the most powerful mutant in the world.

Dark Phoenix Trailer: The X-Men's Latest Nemesis Is Within Their Own Ranks

It's been unclear whether the movie would be called "X-Men: Dark Phoenix" or not.

That wasn't necessarily a given, seeing as this is the second attempt to translate the Dark Phoenix story to film.

It seems that the new theme amongst some of the upcoming Marvel superhero movies is going to be alien invasions. Maybe. It's a bit early to judge from a first teaser which is probably holding a bunch of stuff back, but this is hitting far too many beats from X-Men: The Last Stand for my liking, instead of embracing the cosmic aspects of the Dark Phoenix Saga. Sophie revealed in a December 2017 interview about why she's excited about the female-centric X-Men movie.

Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on February 14. The film also stars Nicholas Hoult, Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee, with Jessica Chastain as the villain, who tries to lure Jean away from Professor X.
