She'll be in the pivotal role of representing the 11 Republican - and male - members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who selected Mitchell in part to avoid the appearance of an all-male GOP bloc scrutinizing Ford's allegations.

The Republican strategy of appointing a female special counsel to question Christine Blasey Ford appeared to backfire.

But they worry that they only have five minutes for questions. 'What a total and complete Political disaster for Republicans'.

Before independent counsel Rachel Mitchell began questioning Ford, she first apologised for her "terror" in delivering the remarks. Kavanaugh has sat on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit since 2006. "My responsibility is to tell the truth". "More time, more ludicrous allegations".

Senators were told to be prepared for a rare weekend session and McConnell said he was confident Kavanugh would be confirmed.

Hence the introduction of Mitchell, whose role was announced by Chuck Grassley, the senator from Iowa and chair of the judiciary committee, on Friday.

But it's not just Kavanaugh's words that matter - it's the optics. No, Kavanaugh dutifully answered, over and over. "I would not be wanting to ask questions about something like this". Everybody who actually knows him, in a real way, say [s] this is not the guy I know.

Senators handing their responsibility off to someone else, as the GOP has in this case, is highly unusual. And in fact, you may see - it may backfire on the Republicans itself.

A third friend, Rebecca White, said Ford revealed in 2017 that she was assaulted as a young teenager by a man who is now a federal judge.

Ford testified that she was "100%" certain it was Kavanaugh who sexually assaulted her when they were in high school decades ago.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who is not on the Judiciary Committee, said, "Inadvertently somebody will do something that's insensitive". His reaction to Thursday's testimony could be the clearest immediate indicator of Kavanaugh's fate.

India's Parliament had expressed solidarity while paying respect to the memory of those killed. He further added, "Pakistan knows how to tackle India should it make a mistake".

Bruce Feder, a defense attorney in the county, said that as a manager, Mitchell spends less time now in the courtroom but had plenty of experience questioning both victims and people accused of wrongdoing.

"I do not know how I will assess the credibility of these witnesses - these human beings - on the grave matters that will be testified to, because I have not yet heard a word of their testimony", he said. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

But under the committee's procedures, the career prosecutor was limited to five minutes at a time, interspersed between Democrats' questions, creating a choppy effect as she tried piecing together Ford's story.

How will Democrats question Kavanaugh?

. Clune is among those asking that the FBI open a new investigation into the sexual assault claims against Kavanaugh.

In a 2012 interview with FrontLine magazine, which is associated with the church group Foundations Baptist Fellowship International, Mitchell said she did not initially plan to go into prosecuting sex crimes but was inspired after working with an attorney who prosecuted a youth choir director. The questioning moved on to Sen.

Thursday will be different.

The tenor of the questions suggested Mitchell was trying, if gently, to question the reliability of Ford's recollections and portray Ford as a pawn of Democrats who are out to stop Kavanaugh at any cost.

The midterm elections are less than six weeks away, and Republican candidates across the country will be holding their breaths Thursday.

Republicans had Mitchell, an Arizona prosecutor, ask questions to Ford on their behalf.

So when Mitchell began with her dry prosecutorial questioning of Kavanaugh, Trump allies - and reportedly the president himself - quickly made a decision to pull the plug on her. On multiple occasions, Kavanaugh proclaimed his love for beer, and in an exchange most likely unprecedented in a Senate hearing, a discussion of flatulence happened.
