Google's Project Stream lets you play Assassin's Creed Odyssey in Chrome

"We're going to push the limits with one of the most demanding applications for streaming - a blockbuster video game", Google product manager Catherine Hsiao said in a blog post. Like Nvidia's GeForce Now, the Google service would offload the work of rendering graphics to beefy computers elsewhere, allowing even the cheapest PCs to play high-end games. Google wants to try and give you that through a stream that is playable through a browser. However, the privilege to stream the game will be extended to "a limited number of participants".

You can throw your name in the hat at the official Project Stream website.

The public test will be open to a limited number of participants based in the USA who have access to internet connections capable of 25 megabits per second. But what if you could play the latest AAA titles - say, Assassin's Creed Odyssey - right within Chrome? You can register here.

Improvements in internet bandwidth, computing power and data storage capabilities are enabling "disruptive technologies" such as streaming which have the potential to change the way games are created as well as played, according to Ubisoft. Still, you can register for access to Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Project Stream today, if you're feeling lucky. If you fit the bill, you can go ahead and register for the chance to be part of the test here. It saves users from taking up hardware space with large video games (which can sometimes be larger than 100 GBs) and opens up the possibility of services that allow players to play games for a limited time on a subscription basis.
