'Aggressive' Chinese destroyer came within 45 yards of U.S. warship

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the nation will aim to provide a calming influence on rising tensions between China and the US.

Chinese warship sailed within yards of an American destroyer - forcing it to change course - in an "unsafe and unprofessional" encounter as the U.S. vessel was in contested waters in the South China Sea, an official said on Monday. US-Chinese relations have been strained on multiple levels since Donald Trump became president in 2017. Later Oct. 1, the South Korean military detected North Korean soldiers engaged in what it believed was demining on the northern part of the sites, a South Korean defense official said on condition of animosity, citing department rules.

The U.S. Pacific Fleet described the incident as "unsafe, unprofessional and aggressive". The South China Sea is claimed by China but remains disputed, while the East China Sea has been declared an air defense identification zone by China.

Beijing reacted furiously after the incident, saying America's "freedom of navigation" operation threatened China's sovereignty and security, and damaged military relations between the two powers.

The encounter, which USA officials described as "unsafe and unprofessional", took place in a part of the Pacific Ocean that China considers Chinese territory.

The Chinese destroyer came within 41 metres (135 feet) of the American warship, the USA navy said, describing the Chinese move as "unsafe and unprofessional".

That all came around the time U.S. B-52 bombers took part in a combined operation with Japan over the East China Sea, and flew through global airspace over the South China Sea.

This was stated by the spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang at a regular news briefing.

Reuters reported on Sunday that China canceled a security meeting with Mattis that had been planned for October.

China once brushed aside US accusations of "militarizing" the South China Sea - something the country's leader, Xi Jinping, vowed publicly not to do during an appearance with President Barack Obama in 2015.

The vessels came disturbingly close to physically colliding.

"With tensions elevated, China seems motivated to risk a possible collision as a means of intimidation".

Trump's trade war has infuriated Beijing, as did his authorization of a $1.3 billion arms sale to Taiwan, which China considers a rebel province.

Since Trump took office past year, his administration has escalated pressure on China, most recently with several rounds of tit-for-tat economic trade tariffs on hundreds of billions in goods.

Relations between the US and China have deteriorated, as escalating trade disputes and tariff hikes have been exacerbated by a newly announced USA military equipment sale to Taiwan and some recent military operations.

Sunday's near-collision comes after weeks of friction between Washington and Beijing over a range of issues. China has ignored the ruling, however, and the fortification of seven artificial islands it has built there has made Chinese control of those waters virtually a fait accompli.
