While Collins acknowledged that Blasey Ford's testimony was honest, painful and compelling, and that the accuser is a sexual assault survivor, she added that "I do not believe that these charges can fairly prevent Judge Kavanaugh from serving on the court".

"We could tell that people really wanted Kavanaugh", Beck Bennett's Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told CNN anchor Dana Bash, played by Heidi Gardner.

Both parties are hoping the bitter struggle will energize their most loyal voters to stream to the polls in less than five weeks, when GOP control of the House and perhaps the Senate is in play.

Adding to the day's drama, women protesters in the Senate gallery shouting, "Shame on you!" briefly interrupted the confirmation vote.

Two other women accused him in the media of sexual misconduct in the 1980s. The hearings further reflect how easy, and unjust, it has become for a woman to make uncorroborated accusations against a good man, for something that allegedly happened decades ago, and consequently inflict severe injury on him and his family.

Trump stood by Kavanaugh, a federal appeals court judge with a history of advancing Republican causes, and this week mocked Ford's account of what she says was a drunken attack on her by Kavanaugh when they were teenagers.

Ahead of the vote, hundreds of people protested against Mr Kavanaugh's nomination at the US Capitol in Washington.

Dozens were arrested as they and others chanted "Vote them out!" and "No justice, no seat!" "I have voted no". Janus v. AFSCME Council 31 made it more hard for public employee unions to collect dues, a policy that has been shown to hurt Democrats in state elections.

Kavanaugh will be sworn in as an associate justice of the Supreme Court on Saturday by Chief Justice John Roberts and the man he will replace, the Court's crucial swing vote, Anthony Kennedy.

"Kavanaugh's confirmation is devastating as unresolved questions remain about his human rights record, including in relation to the US government's use of torture and other forms of ill treatment, such as during the Central Intelligence Agency detention program", Daphne Eviatar, Amnesty International USA's director of security with human rights, said in a statement.

Emily Ratajkowski shamed, told to 'put on a bra' while protesting Kavanaugh
Ratajkowski has confirmed she was detained amid the chaos and there have been images posted on TV and online of Schumer's arrest. In true Amy fashion, she took the mother's phone to send a message to her daughter, who posted the video to Twitter .

"My congratulations to Judge Kavanaugh for his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court, he is fully qualified and I am confident he will do an excellent job".

He took indirect aim at the women who have accused Kavanaugh of sexual assault, praising the "incredible Republican senators for refusing to back down in the face of the Democrats' shameless campaign of political and personal destruction".

But the fight was defined by the sexual assault accusations.

But Murkowski's vote was a stark reminder of the divisions the nomination fight sparked and of her increasingly lonely position in a party that has become less hospitable to moderating voices during Trump's presidency.

The Senate voted Saturday to confirm Brett M. Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court, following contentious and heated hearings into allegations of sexual assault that sharply divided the Senate and the nation.

Kavanaugh's confirmation as a replacement for retiring justice Anthony Kennedy was controversial from the start - but the initial focus was exclusively on the conservative views held by the married father of two.

The US Senate on Friday narrowly approved moving to a final vote on President Donald Trump's embattled Supreme Court amid continuing controversy over sexual abuse allegations against him.

Manchin announced he would vote to confirm Kavanaugh, in spite of "reservations" about the allegations and the nominee's temperament.

"I thought that Susan was incredible yesterday", Trump told reporters Saturday as he left the White House to fly to Kansas for a political rally.

"I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been".
