Trump hosts Kavanaugh for ceremonial swearing

Donald Trump swears in Brett Kavanaugh, says sexual assault allegations were a 'hoax' - Donald Trump's America

Brett Kavanaugh took the bench with his new Supreme Court colleagues for the first time Tuesday in a jovial atmosphere that was strikingly at odds with the tension and rancor surrounding his high-court confirmation. The court will be hearing arguments Tuesday in two previously little-noticed cases involving the Armed Career Criminal Act, a federal law that imposes heightened penalties on people who repeatedly commit serious crimes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. President Donald Trump apologized to Brett Kavanaugh for the bitter battle over his confirmation to the Supreme Court and declared him "innocent" of the sexual assault allegations that almost derailed his nomination. "We don't give up", he said.

Kavanaugh is Trump's second appointee to the Supreme Court.

As Gorsuch did in his first arguments previous year, Kavanaugh focused heavily on the importance of following earlier decisions of the court.

He said: "Although the Senate confirmation process tested me as it has tested others, it did not change me".

The two-vote margin of victory in the Senate made it the closest Supreme Court confirmation vote since 1881 - and by far the most contentious since Clarence Thomas in 1991. He's now Justice Kavanaugh, but that doesn't mean the Democrats are done with him. The FBI probe into the allegations against Kavanaugh reportedly found no corroboration of the allegations against him but was criticized by Democrats for not being a full investigation.

And on Monday evening he was the guest of honour at a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House.

'Aggressive' Chinese destroyer came within 45 yards of U.S. warship
This was stated by the spokesperson for the Chinese Defence Ministry Senior Colonel Ren Guoqiang at a regular news briefing. Reuters reported on Sunday that China canceled a security meeting with Mattis that had been planned for October.

It seemed like business as usual in the ornate courtroom, three days after Kavanaugh was confirmed by the Republican-led Senate despite being accused of sexual assault by a university professor named Christine Blasey Ford.

The bruising campaign to install Kavanaugh onto the court could leave a mark on his reputation and on public confidence in the institution, legal experts say.

After his ceremonial swearing in, Kavanaugh told the audience that all his new law clerks at the Supreme Court were women - a first in the history of the Supreme Court.

Former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is not impressed with how President Trump conducted himself at last night's ceremony for the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh. Keeping score on this sort of thing may feel unseemly and irrelevant, but if a right-wing justice had amassed a similar record over a similar period of time, I suspect we'd hear a lot more about it - and not the context of a flurry of swooning films, either.

Before Kavanaugh's taking of the oath, U.S. President Donald Trump slammed the judge's opponents for a "campaign of personal destruction".

Denard Stokeling, a Florida man, argues that his 20-year-old conviction for "unarmed robbery" for snatching a woman's necklace should not be deemed a violent felony. Either way, he added, for Trump to declare that Kavanaugh was proven innocent is a "wild overstatement to say the least, and very likely an inaccurate read of what happened".

As Kavanaugh won't vote in any cases prior to his tenure, these votes could end in a 4-4 tie, leading to either a reinstatement of the lower court ruling or a retrial with Kavanaugh.
