World Mental Health Day 2018: Raising awareness and combating stigma

BRITAIN has appointed the world's first minister for suicide prevention. "Our programme takes mental health beyond just raising awareness and offers a full circle of support to address everyone's overall wellbeing".

More than three in four USA employees (76 percent) have dealt with issues negatively affecting their mental health according to new survey results. Performing "aerobic exercise" and eating a balanced diet, including fruit and vegetables, gives strong health and mental health benefits.

Campbell said: "On a really bad day - and it's far from every day - I think, "I don't really want to be here".

He said some mental health disorders include anxiety disorder such as panic disorder, phobias obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Affective disorders affect 6% of the population every year, while substance use disorders affect 5%. Depression is the most common, being projected to have affected 170,000 adults. For example, children with conduct disorder are twice more likely to drop out of school, four times more likely to become addicted to drugs and twenty times more likely to end up in jail.

In an era where speech is more and more polarised and combative, "labels" used to refer to mentally unhealthy people can lead to negative effects that you and I can't imagine of.

"Samaritans' 20,000 volunteers are available at any time for anyone who is struggling to cope".

The new measures are part of a wider mental health strategy which will see thousands of therapists sent into classrooms, and annual publication of a "happiness index" tracking the state of the nation's youth.

They especially point out that the number of suicides of women aged under 25 has increased by 76% over the past 10 years.

The CEO Roundtable will release the complete findings of the survey, along with mental health program summaries from member companies, in a report later this year.

"When we get this right, our people go from functioning to flourishing, which means that everyone inside Xero is set up to play to their strengths and do their best work". Tragic, because the rising rates of suicide in countries around the world underscore the pervasiveness of mental illnesses.

"There is an urgent imperative to invest in youth suicide prevention where it is likely to have greatest impact - in our service system".

In addition, community centres across Swindon have taken a pledge to support wellbeing and signed up to a six-month campaign called '5 Ways to Thrive in your Community;. One in four people in the United Kingdom suffer from this illness and I really hope this campaign will continue to extend the conversation about how important good mental health is, and how urgently we need the government to pour money into mental health resources - the county's crying out for it.
