RSF suggests such a probe could be carried out by the U.N. special rapporteur on Freedom of Expression and the U.N. special rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, in conjunction with the U.N. working group. He'd been living in the United States in self-imposed exile.

Turkey can not remain silent over the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, President Tayyip Erdogan was quoted as saying by Hurriyet newspaper on Thursday, adding Turkey is investigating all aspects of the case.

He visited the consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to obtain documentation to finalize his divorce; his Turkish fiancée waited for him outside the building, and reported him missing after he didn't return.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia on October 9 invited Turkish experts and relevant officials to visit its Istanbul consulate.

Last year, the United States and Saudi Arabia signed an arms deal under which the kingdom would purchase $110 billion in weapons. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey has demanded the Saudis provide evidence proving their claim. The Post said "a person close to the investigation" shared the image with them.

Despite the possible Saudi involvement in the disappearance and possible murder of Khashoggi, which has been widely condemned internationally, US relations with Saudi Arabia are "excellent", Trump said.

Turkey has asked for permission to search Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul, broadcaster NTV said on Monday.

Saudi Arabia, which has denied the accusations, is under huge worldwide pressure, including from the USA and the European Union, to support a "thorough and open" probe into the journalist's disappearance. He's gone missing after entering a Saudi consulate in Turkey.

US and Saudi officials have yet to comment on that report.

The watchdog accused the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen of "numerous violations of worldwide humanitarian law, including likely war crimes".

US officials think it's possible the Crown Prince wanted Khashoggi silenced, but miscalculated the global impact his disappearance would have. The Washington Post first reported the details of the intercepts.US President Donald Trump is facing increased pressure over the Khashoggi case.

"It reflected their efforts from their perspective to show that stories or rumours that Jamal Khashoggi had been adducted or was being held inside the consulate were not true".

Earlier reports said Turkish police were focusing on 15 Saudi citizens who came to Turkey on two airplanes on the day of the incident.

The president did not provide details on a US investigation. The official said that getting Khashoggi to the consulate appears to have been a backup plan, because he couldn't be persuaded to fly back to Saudi Arabia.

"I have to find out what happened", Mr Trump added. Trump on Thursday described the relationship as "excellent".

"We'll have a report out soon" on the disappearance of the journalist, Jamal Khashoggi, Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

The Turkish president stressed that the incidence of the disappearance of Khashoggi is, "of high importance", and explained that "it is part of our political and moral duties to follow up this case, and it is impossible to ignore it". Speaking with "Fox News @ Night" Wednesday night, Trump warned such a move "would be hurting us".

Meanwhile, Britain urged the Saudi government to explain what happened.
