Celtics Make Statement in Season Opener

Joel Embiid: Celtics vs Sixers Isn’t A Rivalry, “They Always Kick Our Ass”

The Celtics, on the other hand, have an abundance of talent and last night just reinforced how hard it's going to be for Brad Stevens to get shots for everybody.

The Boston Celtics started their season on an extreme high Tuesday night when they defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 105-87 in the TD Garden.

Now, Embiid deserves some blame as well for tunnel-visioning, but the Celtics deployed the same strategy against the Sixers in every matchup last season, leading to the lopsided match-ups between the teams.

No rivalry, he says. "They were tremendous. It was everything I expected when I originally signed here". But it's pretty bad. "They always kick our ass". "So this is not a rivalry". His free throw shooting (5-11) still needs to improve, but he's moving well, seeing the court well and showed that he can be an unstoppable force on the floor. He took a great no-look pass from Simmons and finished in the lane and also drove and hit a 15-foot pull-up jumper.

This move will also allow Brown's first-team offense to remain fast, with five players capable of playing, and covering multiple positions, essentially the antithesis of their second-team unit.

The Celtics held a 47-42 lead at halftime, then steadily increased it the rest of the way as the defense got better. Marcus Morris had 16 off the bench on 7 for 12 shooting.

There was nothing that Saric could do and it hurt the Sixers as a team with having him on the bench and not getting good minutes.

The Celts shot 36.5 percent in the first half, which allowed the 76ers to hang around at least numerically for a while. Hayward didn't even make it out of the first quarter of the first game previous year, but he returned Tuesday night to score 10 points with five rebounds and four steals.

The World Cup victor added: "For me, those games are the best games to play". Manager Jose Mourinho added: "Luke fully deserves this contract".

"My adrenaline was pumping the first three or four minutes", said Hayward, limited to 25 minutes on court.

Now even though Hayward will be looking to start the season off strong I think that Celtics fans need to manage their expectations. It was sloppy at first. And if he's fortunate, he'll end up being mentioned among the greats, just like Kobe. "I thought that, again, our depth was a big factor in the game".

For Boston, we have long awaited the return of Gordon Hayward, and tonight it finally happens.

This is the National Basketball Association in 2018.

It's especially tough on Embiid, the gum-flapping, oft-tweeting big man who called Celtics center Aron Baynes "man bun" during the playoffs a year ago. Therefore, despite the tremendous success of the Sixers last season, there's still likely to be some growing pains moving forward.

Curry had 32 points, nine assists and eight rebounds, Durant added 27 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and the Golden State Warriors opened their quest for a three-peat by holding off the Oklahoma City Thunder 108-100 on Tuesday night.

The Sixers in their home opener face the Chicago Bulls on Thursday at 8 p.m.
