Finau had five birdies in his first 10 holes, but then he double bogeyed the 11th when his ball landed on a sprinkler head beside the green and kicked into a hazard.

Reed didn't make a par over the last six holes, with four birdies and two bogeys. He has 10 finishes the top 10, and his consistency led to him making his first Ryder Cup.

Finau had led by three overnight at 11 under, but was two over through 12 on Saturday and saw Rose - who is looking to become only the second man after Tiger Woods to retain a World Golf Championships title - take charge at the top of the leaderboard. In his opening fourballs match with Brooks Koepka, the US team looked to be in big trouble until Finau's tee shot on the 16th hole hit off the railroad ties framing the green and settled 3 feet away, crucial to winning the match.

McIlroy tees off his second round alongside Francesco Molinari (+4) and Dustin Johnson (+2) at 1:40am United Kingdom time on Friday morning. Then, his 4-iron to the par-5 18th was too far right and tumbled down the hill and into the water. "But one thing I learned from this game is you take the good with the bad", Finau said with a laugh.

"I don't think there's many positives and I don't think there's many negatives", said Koepka of his week.

Abe sets off for official visit to China
Analysts say the optics of Abe's three-day visit will be more important than the concrete outcomes, which are likely to be modest. On the Taiwan issue, Abe reaffirmed Japan's adherence to its position stated in the 1972 Japan-China Joint Statement.

Defending champion Justin Rose shot a 72 to finish four shots behind the leading pair in third place, which was only just insufficient for the Briton to replace Brooks Koepka as world number one.

Matthew Fitzpatrick of England had two late birdies in a 67 that left him in solo fourth, while Billy Horschel carded a bogey-free 68 to tie for fifth with Tommy Fleetwood of England, Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand, Rafa Cabrera Bello of Spain and C.T. Pan of Taiwan. Americans now have won 41 of the 69 events since the World Golf Championships series began in 1999.

He is joined on the score by Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy.

McIlroy also was wild at times off the tee, though it really only cost him on the short 16th hole.

Reed has not crossed paths with Jordan Spieth since accusing his team mate of splitting up their partnership at last month's Ryder Cup. Last year, he finished second at the Safeway Open in California to get his season off to a strong start. It's hard to swallow when you feel like you hit a good shot and you have a bad break like that.
