"The United States calls on all parties to support UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict in Yemen based on the agreed references", US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement. Pompeo said last month that he had certified to the US Congress that Saudi Arabia and the UAE were working to reduce civilian casualties in Yemen.

Tuesday's statements by top United States leadership signals a drastic shift from a mute White House approach to the three-year-old conflict, which has claimed over 10,000 lives and plunged Yemen into humanitarian disaster.

The US duo insisted that the US-backed Saudi-led coalition and the Iranian-aligned Houthis stop their respective aerial and missile attacks.

Critics say coalition bombing is causing an unacceptable number of civilian deaths and fuelling the humanitarian crisis.

While Donald Trump has repeatedly refused to cancel the record $110 billion arms sales contract he signed with the Saudis previous year, some USA lawmakers paradoxically considered winding down U.S. support for the war in Yemen as a way to punish Riyadh for the Khashoggi murder.

He said the U.S. is calling for all warring parties to meet with United Nations special envoy Martin Griffiths in Sweden in November and "come to a solution".

Mattis, addressing a forum in Washington on Tuesday, defended United States efforts to help reduce casualties by the Saudi-led coalition and said all sides needed to take meaningful steps toward a ceasefire and negotiations in the next 30 days.

Washington called late on Monday for an end to the conflict in Yemen, backing UN-led efforts to find a political solution to the war, which has claimed thousands of lives and brought the already impoverished country to the verge of starvation. "That is the only way we are going to really solve this".

"It is time to end this conflict, replace conflict with compromise, and allow the Yemeni people to heal through peace and reconstruction", declared the top diplomat of the country that supplies the coalition with the bulk of its weapons, as well as intelligence and reconnaissance assistance.

Saudi Arabia launched a brutal war in 2015 to root out Yemen's Houthi fighters, who had taken control of the capital, Sanaa, and ousted the government.

Pompeo said the consultations planned by Griffiths should start in November "to implement confidence-building measures to address the underlying issues of the conflict, the demilitarization of borders, and the concentration of all large weapons under global observation".

Why is there a war in Yemen?

Almost 10,000 people have since been killed and the country now stands at the brink of starvation.

The fighting and a partial blockade by the coalition has also left 22 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world's largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is thought to have affected a million people.
