Trump eyes asylum limits for caravans; would they be legal?

US President Donald Trump in recent weeks has repeatedly said more troops are needed to tighten security at the US-Mexico border

Another contingent splintered off by hitchhiking rides and walking to Tierra Blanca, Veracruz, which lies about 128 kilometres to the north.

The current focus of the president's claim to be acting against "an invasion" is the dwindling group of a few thousand impoverished migrants trying to get north, but still far from the U.S. border.

He dialled this rhetoric up a notch today gave a characteristically will-he-or-won't-he threat to the migrants, saying that if they throw rocks at American border guards (which presumably they would do only if denied entry), then Trump says the American forces will consider it as if they were shooting guns and will not hesitate to shoot back.

In a meandering speech at the White House about immigration, Trump recycled numerous talking points he touts on the campaign trail - but offered little in the way of concrete ways to address the problems he embellished. The official says there are about 2,600 USA troops now at staging bases, largely in Texas, with several thousand more expected to flow in through the weekend and move into California and Arizona.

Patience appeared to be wearing thin among 4,000 Central American migrants on Saturday, as exhausted members of the caravan journeying toward the United States openly disagreed with organizers who are shepherding the group through southern Mexico.

He went on to clarify how he phrased it to the military: "I told them: 'consider it a rifle.'" Let's hope that the military of a country founded by immigrants shows some restraint.

The migrants made a grueling 40-mile (65-kilometer) trek from Juchitan, Oaxaca, on Thursday, after they failed to get the bus transportation they had hoped for. Their determination to journey some 2,000 miles, despite the awful suffering and complete lack of money or resources, is what also has inspired many in Mexico to come to their aid.

"They were throwing rocks in their face. They want to throw rocks at our military, our military fights back", he said.

We don't have to meet the invading army of illegal aliens with tanks to assure that they do not pose a threat to our national security or overwhelm our border patrol and immigration system.

The plaintiffs specifically allege that Trump's promise to stop the caravan of migrants now traveling toward the southern border using the military violates the due process rights of legitimate asylum-seekers fleeing the "well-documented human rights crisis" unfolding in Honduras and El Salvador.

Svitolina could rise three spots to world number four on the rankings after her triumph and she has now won nine straight finals. Stephens, the 2017 US Open champion, controlled the first set but Svitolina broke three times in the second.

The second caravan, also of about 1,000 to 1,500 people, is now in Mapastepec, Chiapas.

Trump openly threatened to massacre the caravan of workers and peasants escaping war and poverty in Central America.

Mexico says there are around 2,800 to 3,000 men, woman and children in the caravan.

In the smaller caravans, immigration agents and police have at times detained migrants. Not only did the hoped-for buses not arrive, but federal police began pulling freight trucks over and forcing migrants off, saying their habit of clinging to the tops or sides of the trucks was risky.

With or without the government's help, uncertainty awaits.

Senior Trump administration officials have previously encouraged asylum-seekers to make their claims at official ports of entry.

The president announced on Wednesday that he was considering deploying up to 15,000 troops to the U.S.

Asked if he envisions U.S. troops firing on anyone in the groups of migrants, Trump told reporters at the White House: "I hope not".

'Many Gang Members and some very bad people are mixed into the Caravan heading to our Southern Border, ' Trump wrote on twitter, moving away from last week's claim that the caravan contained 'Middle Easterners'. Think of it. Somebody walks into our country, reads a statement given by a lawyer, and we have a three-and-a-half-year court case for one person.
